The Church of San Michele Arcangelo dates back to the Norman era (12th century), but a pre-existing church cannot be ruled out, as suggested by its dedication to St. Michael (the Lombards’ most venerated saint) and the early medieval finds. The entrance to the church, preceded by a portico, is to the side, not opposite, the altar. The wall opposite the apse is occupied by a loggia, which today houses the organ but was perhaps once the curial loggia, justifying the reuse of Roman columns for a noble purpose. It is hypothesized that this room was the palatine chapel in Norman times.
