The small Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel dominates the spectacular panorama of Buonabitacolo from atop a mountain. Devotion to the prophet Elijah was perpetuated here in ancient times. As in Israel, a small church was built here on Mount Carmel, originally dedicated to Elijah, and later dedicated to the Virgin of Mount Carmel.
Of ancient origins, the chapel was transformed and expanded in the 18th century. During this period, it underwent a meticulous decorative campaign, enriching it with polychrome stucco and a sumptuous altar dating to 1794. It houses the statues of Saints Elijah and Anthony, and the statue of the Madonna on the high altar. The building features a small bell tower and the Pilgrim’s House, built to accommodate the faithful who reached it after a strenuous journey.
On July 18th, the local youth will ascend the mountain with a solemn torchlight procession for the preparatory vigil for the descent of the statue of the Madonna into the village, scheduled for July 19th. The Madonna will be brought back to the Sanctuary in an equally solemn procession on the third Sunday of September.
