SANTUARIO MARIA DELLE NEVI Sanza
(Italiano) Santuario
Maria delle Nevi
Sanza

The place

The pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve, located atop Mount Cervati, is one of the most important manifestations of popular religious belief in Campania. It reveals the presence of rites and rituals undoubtedly attributable to pre-Christian cultures, which are beautifully layered in the Pilgrimage to Cervati through the mediation of Italo-Greek monasticism.

The offering of Cente stands out: votive boats made from candles and decorated with flowers and grain, brought in homage to the Virgin by mostly barefoot women. An 18th-century document preserved in the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria della Neve in Sanza indicates that the cult predates the foundation of the chapel dedicated to the Madonna on Mount Cervato in the 9th century. The sanctuary consists of two buildings: the older one, dating back to the medieval period, has a rectangular plan, a pointed vault and a “palcale” (a wooden platform) running along the two longer sides, and is topped by an apse wall featuring three niches; The other opposite most likely dates back to the 18th century.

Between July 26th and August 5th each year, the 16th-century wooden statue of the Madonna and Child is housed here. Unlike the other ancient statue preserved in the nearby cave, it is carried on the shoulders of devotees from the village of Sanza, in a unique pilgrimage of extraordinary anthropological interest.
